Hang Tags for Thrifted Gifts

Hey there, thrift-loving friend! I think there is something magical about finding that perfect vintage gem at the local thrift store. And what better way to share the joy of thrifted treasures than by turning them into thoughtful gifts? Today I am covering the first in a series showing you how to make your second hand, sustainable gifts the best they can be by showing you how to create your own decorative hang tags, adding a touch of handmade charm to your thrifted delights.

Supplies:

Hang tag template (Download it here or create your own!)
Decorative paper scraps
Scissors
Glue
Hole punch
String

Start by downloading the hang tag template (or create your own custom version of this). Print out your template onto card stock and cut apart the tags.

Now, let’s get artsy! Raid your stash of decorative paper scraps – think old magazines, scrapbooking remnants, or even repurposed wrapping paper. The goal here is to add a unique and personal touch to each hang tag. Cut out shapes, patterns, or images that resonate with the recipient or the item itself. Choose your top layer background for your hang tag and add glue to your template tag.

Attached the template to your first layer of decorative paper.

With your scissors, trim around your tag leaving about a quarter of an inch frame around the tag.

Choose your next layer of paper that will be added to the back of the tag. Once again, add glue to your tag.

Place the tag onto the second layer of decorative paper. Experiment with layering different paper elements onto your hang tag. Play with colors, textures, and sizes to create a visually appealing collage. This step is all about expressing your creativity and making each tag a tiny work of art.

Once more you are going to trim the paper to create a quarter inch frame around your tag as seen in this photo.

I like to trim the top corners to give it a more “tag” type feel.

Using your hole punch, create a hole in the top middle of the tag. This is where you will add your decorative string and attach the tag to your cleaned and pressed thrifted garment.

Now you have created a handmade hang tag ready to adorn your thrifted treasures! With a dash of creativity and a sprinkle of personal flair, your gifts will not only be sustainable and stylish but also carry a touch of your artistic spirit.
